There’s so much we just don’t understand about love! With so many different types of love and different sorts of feelings, it’s tough to know what kind of love you’re feeling at the moment.
Psychologists like to use the “love triangle” to differentiate between the various types of love. This triangle shows the three different dimensions of love:
- Intimacy — This is a closeness that you feel with another person. It has nothing to do with sex, but it is all about how close and connected you feel with that person. This is the emotional bond that you form with someone when you spend a lot of time with them. The desire to be close and connected to them is strong.
- Passion –– When it comes to passion, it’s all about the intensity of your desire for that person. Are you very strongly attracted to them? Do you have strong sexual desire? If so, that’s passion you’re feeling! Feelings of romantic attraction and sexual desire are lumped into this single tip of the triangle.
- Commitment –– This has nothing to do with how you feel about the other person, but it has everything to do with how committed you are to them. Are you willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the relationship? Are you committed to your partner through thick and thin? That is all the commitment end of the triangle.
According to psychologists, this “love triangle” can help you to understand the type of love that you feel toward another person. In Part 2, we’ll take a closer look at the different types of love and how much of each “tip” of the love triangle is included in each type…
