It’s vital to have honesty in romance, or else your relationship will never succeed! But how much honesty is too much? Should you be completely honest, or is there ever a time to keep your thoughts to yourself?
Here are some tips to help you be honest the right way:
Understand what honesty really is — Honesty isn’t about speaking whatever thoughts come to mind or saying whatever you feel like saying whenever you want. Honesty is about telling the other person the truth, even when it’s hard for you to say or them to hear. There are times when you will have to put aside your discomfort or fear to tell the truth, and there are times when you will have to tell the other person the way you feel regardless of their reaction.
However, just because you need to tell the truth, that doesn’t mean you need to use truth like a weapon. You can still spare the other person’s feelings, make it easy on them, and be considerate while telling the truth. If your honesty is meant to hurt others, it’s not the right kind of honesty. If you’re telling the truth in order to improve your relationship, you’re doing it right.
Use honesty to open communication –– The whole point of being honest is to tell the other person how you are feeling, and that opens up a dialogue that will help to bring the two of you closer together. It’s about communication, even when the topic of conversation is a bit harder to discuss. That’s what honesty is all about, so keep that in mind when you are considering whether or not to tell the other person something.
